José graduated from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 2008 and subsequently completed his honours degree in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery at the same university. After relocating to Pretoria in 2009, José undertook an 18 month internship in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery and also enrolled in an MSc degree looking at the bacterial profiles and antibiograms of bacteria isolates from exposed pulps of dog and cheetah canine teeth, which he completed in 2012.
José moved to the UK in 2011 and worked in general practice, whilst accepting referrals in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery from the Kent and Surrey areas. In 2015, he moved back to South Africa, where he joined Tygerberg Animal Hospital as a veterinarian with a special interest in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. José passed the South African Veterinary Council examinations in 2016. At the beginning of 2017 he provided a veterinary dentistry and maxillofacial surgery consultancy for small animals across South Africa. José was appointed an extraordinary lecturer in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery at Ondersterpoort Veterinary Academic Hospital in 2018.
José joined Southfields Veterinary Specialists in January 2021 and will be sitting examinations to become a European Specialist in Veterinary Dentistry this summer. He has a special interest in wildlife dentistry and maxillofacial surgery and has presented at national and international congresses and published in international peer reviewed journals.
